Software Engineering Apprentice at BT/ BSc Hons in Computer Science

Why did you come to UTCN?

UTCN stood out for me primarily because it was an engineering-based college. Once I read more into it, between the university-apprenticeship choices and the networks they had created with such brilliant companies, it seemed like an obvious choice for the line of work I wanted to get into.

What did you like about UTCN?

My favourite thing about UTCN was the fun and professional environment that the school had set up. Whilst at UTCN I was offered the opportunity to take on the role of employer liaison representing the college. I had an amazing, inclusive support system between both staff and classmates, which meant I never felt left out or out of place. It was the perfect stepping-stone for me to get on to my dream apprenticeship, (even if I didn’t know what it was going to be at the time!)

Why did you apply for an Apprenticeship?

I applied for an apprenticeship because it seems like the perfect post-college move. Not only do you get the degree you’re looking for, but the hands-on work experience alongside it (and you’re getting paid). The apprenticeship scheme gives you the opportunity to meet a network of people, both educationally and professionally, which will kick-start your career in such an amazing way.

What do you like about it?

As part of my Software Engineering Apprenticeship and degree in Computer Science I’m currently learning a variety of programming languages, coding styles and business techniques, as well as furthering my skills and developing new professional goals which help me weekly, if not daily in my everyday life.

What advice would you give UTCN students?

Advice for students at UTCN, prospective students or if you’ve completed your studies would be to try to say yes to as many opportunities as you’re given, you never know what may come from them and which doors they could open. Remember to not put too much pressure on yourself, everyone is on their own journey and things will fall into place as long as you’re focused on what you want to achieve.
