PhD in Agricultural Robotics at the University of East Anglia

Why did you want to come to UTCN?

When I went to UTCN, at the time, it was one of the only opportunities to complete a qualification within engineering that also allowed teaching with other A-Levels. I wanted to go to UTCN to explore engineering and look for a career within STEM.

What did you like about UTCN?

Whilst at UTCN I liked the freedom to study however you wanted. The opportunities were also great, we were lucky enough to go to the GoodWood festival of speed. More opportunities like working for Lotus as a work placement was also possible.

Why did you decide to do a PhD at UEA?

I chose originally to complete a BSc in Computer Science at the University of Lincoln where I chose to specialise in robotics. During my last year I was suggested to apply for the AgriFoRwArdS Centre of Doctoral Training. This CDT specialises in agricultural robotics which my undergraduate thesis was on, it was also published and can be found online. After this publication I realised that research was an area I was interested in.

What does an typical week look like for you?

A typical week consists of teaching all cohort groups (1st,2nd, 3rd and masters). This coming semester I will be teaching 2 modules. I usually work from 9-5 on campus in my office or engineering lab if I am not teaching. I will also have a meeting with my supervisor to discuss how the project is going and look to next week to see what can be completed.

Any tips for students currently studying at UTCN?

  • Learn as much as you can about the job you want to do.
  • Grades aren’t the only thing that matters…. In the end what really matters is showing interest!
