Degree Level Apprentice at Glazing Vision

Why did you come to UTCN?

I came to UTCN as I knew engineering was the path I wanted to follow and UTCN had the best facilities suited towards engineering.

What did you like about UTCN?

I felt that the teaching at UTCN was excellent. Each teacher had worked in the engineering industry, which meant the teachers had real knowledge of the subject as opposed to just teaching us from a book.

Why/ how did you apply for a degree level apprenticeship with Glazing Vision?

The first time I spoke to the people at Glazing Vision was through the mock interviews we had in year 13, where my current manager was interviewing me. I mentioned how I wanted to go into design engineering and he said that he was actually the manger of the design department and Glazing Vision. I completed the interview and he said he was interested in me and told me to keep in touch. A few months later I sent an email through to Glazing Vision asking if there were any design apprentice roles available, to which I was told there wasn’t, but he could create one for me. I was initially enrolled onto a level 4 manufacturing course, but a few months ago I asked if it was possible for me to be moved onto the degree course and the management at Glazing Vision agreed that it was a good idea.

What do you do in your apprenticeship? What do you like about it?

I am currently going around each department within the company spending around a month in each. I am learning what goes on in each department and what issues they face. The idea is that when I am back into design I will have an understanding of what issues designs create, so that I can help to reduce them.

What advice would you give current UTCN students?

Take every opportunity you are given because if I hadn’t have taken the mock interview seriously then it would be unlikely that I would be in the position I am now.
