What did you like about UTCN?

The close links with employers were appealing as the School catered towards what employers wanted to see in the students.

How did you come to be an Aviation Engineering Apprentice at KLM UK Engineering?

I have always been interested in aviation and enjoyed studying engineering at UTCN. The apprenticeship at KLM sounded like a good option for me as it consisted of completing a level 3 qualification in aviation engineering alongside the EASA Category A licence. It also allowed for me to gain the experience I need to apply for the full licence at the end of the apprenticeship.

What do you do in your apprenticeship?

My day usually consists of working alone and alongside other mechanics and engineers. Since I am now a second-year apprentice, I only spend one day a week at college studying for a level 3 qualification and my aircraft licence, my first year was entirely based at college. On a day to day basis I usually stay working on one particular area of the aircraft. This will often change once a new aircraft enters the hangar which keeps the job interesting as we are constantly being rotated. The work varies throughout the check and is different for every aircraft. When faults and defects are found it is very interesting and can make for a good opportunity to learn from other experienced engineers.

Any tips for students currently studying at UTCN?

Take advantage of the links with employers and always put in the effort to have conversations with them. Employers will remember you and it can really help when applying for jobs and interviews.
