Multi-Skilled Engineering Apprentice (Level 3) at the Alton Towers Resort

Why did you come to UTCN?

I came to UTCN because I felt that they would give me the best opportunity in life to help me pursue a career in a sector which I very much enjoy. UTCNs facilities and staff appealed to me greatly as it would give me the training and practical skills I need, along with building up those key employability skills.

What did you like about UTCN?

I really enjoyed the environment that UTCN provided, a professional engineering college but with friendly staff who would help you, no matter the task at hand.

Why did you apply for a multi-skilled engineering apprenticeship at the Alton Towers Resort?

When I completed my EPQ in roller coaster design and modelling, I thought about what career paths there might be in the theme park industry. After some searching around, I came across this apprenticeship. I looked at the role and thought it would be a great way to start my career so I went for it!

What do you do in your apprenticeship? What do you like about it?

During that day, I follow one of the fitters or sparkies around where they let me help out in their morning ride checks before the park opens for guests. During the day, a group of engineers would complete a weekly or monthly maintenance check on one of the rides and wait for a breakdown to then go and fix it. This role is excellent as there’s always something to do, no matter how big the job and that no day is the same.

What advice would you give current UTCN students?

When I first joined UTCN, I wasn’t ambitious and thought I would end up in some boring role on a production line in a factory, but, thanks to the staff at UTCN I ended up finding my true ambition and securing an apprenticeship in a role I adore. My advice to new students at UTCN is to be open minded, don’t think any dream isn’t too ridiculous to reach. If you focus yourself and your studies to what you want to achieve, the chances of that happening are actually pretty good. It happened for me, why not you?
